Wolf Administration Visits Small Businesses Across Pennsylvania,

Highlights Investments Made in Celebration of Small Business Week.

Harrisburg, PA – Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Acting Secretary Neil Weaver and other DCED executives traveled across the Commonwealth to commemorate Small Business Week by highlighting the investment made by the Wolf Administration in small businesses.

“This week I had the pleasure of touring many small businesses across the commonwealth,” declared Acting Secretary. Weaver. “These small-scale businesses are run by our friends, families and neighbors, and their impact on the state’s economy is huge. For every dollar spent at a small company there is a return of $48 into Pennsylvania’s economy. Over 1 million small-scale businesses call the Commonwealth their home, employing more than 2.5 million people. This is because the Wolf Administration has made supporting these small businesses a top priority, and I am proud to watch that so many of them succeed.”

In Berks County in the City of Reading, Acting Sec. Weaver is joined by Mayor Eddie Moran, US Representative Jim Gerlach, state Representative Manuel Guzman, and Councilwoman Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, on a walking tour through the city center of Reading. At the same time, they went to New Heights Grocery Store, The Great American Creamery, La Casa Del Chimi Restaurant, Juice Bar, and the American Barber and Beauty Academy, Acting Sec. Weaver acknowledged the impact these businesses make on the city.

“Reading represents the amazing diversity of Pennsylvania’s small business community,” declared Acting Secretary. Weaver. “Owners from diverse backgrounds are operating businesses that span multiple areas and sectors. It’s also an area where small-scale companies are forming and shaping the communities in which they’re situated. Every minority-owned business we visited emphasized the idea that regardless of your background, where you’re from or what you look like at it, if you’re a tiny company owner who has a positive spirit you are part of Pennsylvania.”

In Philadelphia, Acting Sec. Weaver was at Love City Brewing to highlight the options that small business owners have access to help them expand their business online. In the last two years, people have been accelerating their online purchasing routines, which has made eCommerce a vital source of revenue for small-scale enterprises. Acting Sec. Weaver talked about his thoughts on the PA Business One-Stop program and The Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) as two sources small-scale business owners can utilize for helping to develop their eCommerce capabilities.

In Bedford County, located in Bedford, the Deputy Secretary of Marketing, Tourism, and Film Carrie Fischer Lepore and Deputy Secretary of Technology and Innovation Steve D’Ettorre spoke about the importance of tourism and travel in support of small-scale companies. When they visited Pigeon Hill Studios, Juli’s Wearable Art, Bedford Candies, and Next Door restaurant, Deputy Secretary Lepore and Deputy Secretary D’Ettorre were listening to business owners discuss their role in the Bedford community has played in their accomplishments.

In Scranton, Acting Sec. Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti joins Weaver on a walking tour of the downtown area of Scranton. While walking through RD Salon & Blowdry Bar, The Giving Tree, Commonwealth Coffeehouse, Pink Pedal, and Adezzo, Sec. Weaver pointed out the programs that the Wolf Administration has created to aid minority-owned and women-owned companies, such as the Pennsylvania Minority Business Development Authority (PMBDA) and the Small Diverse Business Capital Access Program (SDBCA), and the Business Opportunities Fund (BOF).

“Small businesses contribute to the culture and fabric of the communities in which they reside,” the Acting Secretary. Weaver. “They give a sense of community and identity as well as the economic benefits they bring. They are people who do not just care about their businesses’ success they are concerned about the success of their community.”

In Erie, Executive Vice Secretary Michael Hanna, Jr. was joined by Mayor Joseph Schember on a tour of some of Erie’s new small-scale enterprises. While visiting Flagship City Food Hall, Primo Tailoring, Chippers Seafood, Southern Fusion, and Purrista Cat Cafe, Executive Deputy Secretary Hanna discovered how Downtown Erie has been growing and thriving in the past two years.

The event took place in Butler County, in the Borough of Zelienople, the acting Sec. Weaver concluded Small Business Week on a walk through the city of Zelienople along with Zelienople’s Mayor, Thomas Oliverio. The tour highlighted the variety and impact of small businesses on Pennsylvania’s economy and communities by stopping at Kaufman Tavern, Eva Bryn Shoetique, Elluinger’s Meats & Delis, and The Little Green Bookstore.

“Small Business Week has been a tradition for Pennsylvania and the United States for decades, but it’s also so much more than that,” declared Acting Secretary. Weaver. “Small businesses form the foundation of the Commonwealth. They boost our communities, help to support economic development in our communities, and create employment to greater than 2.5 millions Pennsylvanians. If we shop at a small-scale helps the community.”
