ORLANDO – On the newly decorated white walls at Mannie Jamie Carmona’s downtown spa, a case is filled with empty Botox vials and Syringes. The label on the subject says, “In case of emergency, break the glass.”
The funky decor has acquired an extra significance recently since the spa faces the most harrowing kind of crisis. The pandemic is fading, but the masks are now off, the Zoom cameras have been in place, and business is going through the roof.
The Luxe Med Spa client list has risen from 120 in 2020 to nearly 800 today. Jamie has quite a 17-year-long career working as an ER nurse. Mannie was a vegan restaurant chef before the pandemic was discovered and quit her other job.
“It’s all because of the pandemic,” said Mannie, 33, who was sitting on the balcony of his office. “It’s created this want — people just want to feel better about themselves.”
While many aspects of an in-person life’s resumé in the present, there are a lot of small-scale businesses that are ready to take advantage of the influx of people who want to indulge in celebrations and stimulating activities. Companies like the Carmona’s have a place in the forefront and thrive on the need to focus on appearances after two years of seclusion.
Mannie recalls a patient who came in months before the outbreak and told her that the Botox procedure was the first time she’d ever left home since the shutdown.
“So many people did what they needed to do to get through this pandemic,” said Glenn MacDonald, an economics professor at Washington University in St. Louis. “That’s fueled this self-care thing. Many people are saying, ‘I’ve gotta do a lot of things to take care of myself, improve my diet, and not be so isolated.’ It’s played into an already existing trend of wellness.”
The pandemic caused havoc, particularly for small and mid-sized companies. As per the U.S. Small Business Administration, the sector was able to lose 9.1 million jobs during the first two quarters of the year 2020. It was challenging to keep employees due to safety concerns, and this led to the issue of finding employees in an era of labor shortage.
However, in 2021 it was 5.4 million applications to establish businesses, according to figures from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce — a record and an increase of 53% from the year before. For confident entrepreneurs, the risks they make are paid back. Small businesses like Carmona’s, which benefit from the return of personal interactions, the current conditions allow them to climb over their pre-pandemic peaks.
“There’s an incredible pent-up demand to get out and be near people,” MacDonald stated. “We were really wondering how that was going to go. Were we afraid of people now? It seems like the opposite.”
Nearby the Carmona’s spa, Destiny Fulbright ditched her bartending job before pandemics to work the lashes full-time. Nowadays, clients are so pleased to see her and speak to her that she’s thought of purchasing a T-shirt with the words “Lash Therapist.”
“I had a lot of women who wanted to do something for themselves,” Fulbright declared. “They come in and say, ‘I haven’t done anything in a year.’ “
The company’s business has grown so that Fulbright has begun selling lash accessories for other artists. The local shortage was transformed into an idea that turned into an additional source of income.
“I’m as busy as I want to be,” she added.
The Carmonas company followed an identical pattern. Initial, their modest business was a simple one with Jamie as the injector and Mannie as the rest of the team -the receptionist “the receptionist, the trash-taker-outer, the cash-out guy,” he explained. During the pandemic, just the couple of clients they had a week seemed like a victory. The moment the public woke up and the floodgates opened.
“It was like 10 clients every single day, every time we were open,” Mannie stated.
He reminisces fondly about the excitement he felt that a customer felt when they received the phone and paid $3,800 for a “full face rejuvenation.” In the post-pandemic world, it’s a long day for revenue. The couple recently relocated their business to a 4-room loft on the second floor. They had to switch from a filing cabinet to store clients’ information to an electronic system for management. They now have ten employees.
“We started asking clients, ‘Why now?’ ” Mannie stated. “They said the same thing: ‘I see myself now on the camera in my meeting and I don’t like how I look. I want to look refreshed.'”
It didn’t happen in an orderly fashion. The Delta coronavirus virus dropped monthly earnings from about $40,000 to just under $10,000. However, that proved as a bump in the road rather than an obstacle. As Delta began to lose its luster and then fade away, the desire to get back to the salon sped to a new high.
“People delayed a lot of things,” MacDonald stated. “If you think of people delaying furniture, cars, vacation. When that ends, there’s an explosion. We weren’t in a business cycle at all.”
The new normal came with a second engine, that was social media. Before the outbreak, spas such as the Carmona’s relied on foot traffic. Their customer base has been driven mainly by internet traffic. They have a strong Instagram account, and they invite customers to snap photos on their balcony, and they spent only $3000 on advertising in 2021, as per Mannie. Mannie estimates that only 30percent of the customers reside downtown. One can drive from Miami.
“Honestly, we’re still in the domino effect of people seeing what their friends got done here,” Mannie told the press.
Just a few blocks from Carmona’s wellness center, Kobina Amoo sees more customers at a doughnut shop named Pattie Lou’s, which he established amid the pandemic. He immediately noticed that the customers were seeking comfort during the most challenging days of the shutdown.
“Here’s an opportunity to brighten someone’s day even though they’ve been at home for two months,” Amoo said. Amoo played the game of college football for Oklahoma State.
The need for change has changed from adapting to remote working and adjusting to back-to-work. In the last year, Amoo received a phone call from a business moving to Orlando and asked if the shop could “handle big orders” in a workplace. One of the customers who visited recently seemed shocked to discover that he’d never been to the store prior. He inquired how long it’s been open. “Ten months,” Amoo responded.
“How long have I been stuck at home?” The man asked, nearly to himself.
Could it be all one huge sugar rush? Possibly. MacDonald stated that he wondered what would happen if the boom that followed the shutdown became “celebrated out of our system.” In addition, there is opportunity competition, and there’s plenty of it, even in an environment of economic uncertainty skewed by worries about inflation and a possible recession.
“There’s med spas on every corner now,” Carmona declared. “I see people trying to open up in garages.”
The Carmonas are looking at the possibility of expanding services for other areas within the human body. There’s a seven-day waiting list for appointments at present. There’s no need to remove the beautiful case hanging on the wall; however, that pandemic “emergency” is not decreasing.
